This artwork is of the Mexican Surrealist Frida Kahlo. There has been a strong resurgence in interest in her work and life recently. The Pink & White symbol in the background is an old Mayan symbol (Hunab Ku) that has been re purposed here and there over time. Generally speaking it is associated with Mexican culture (As Frida’s work was, among other things, about Mexican identity) and a connection to cosmic divinity.

I spent about 200 hours over the course of 2 months creating this. I used coloured ballpoints for her flower headdress, shirt pattern, nails, and ring – unusual for me, but happy I took the risk.
