Original Artwork – Background
Ballpoint pen, marker pen, and spray paint on card. 102 x 65cm (unframed size)
One of my biggest drawings, this one took 280 hours in total to create. See the video below for an in depth look at how it took shape and to get a sense of the details involved.
Using a combination of paint marker (for the pitch Black parts and details) and ballpoint for the shading helped create a sense of more depth and contrast.
In this artwork the sky represents universal mind and enlightenment.
In Buddhism Nirvana (or Nibanna) is the ultimate spiritual goal. It is the freedom from attachment to the physical world and all it’s dependent mental necessities (not the best definition, I urge you to seek a better one).
In life we all know we should be more involved in the pursuit of spiritual attainment over pursuit of material goods yet we are reluctant, and more so than not, slow to follow that path. So, like in this image of Kurt Cobain, we are all slouching our way towards Nibanna.
Creating the intricate and demanding artwork over the many weeks during covid lockdown it felt like a peaceful mandala invocation, an exercise in coming to terms with my own need to adhere better to the path 🙂
The original artwork was exhibited at a solo art exhibition in September 2021 at ArtCatto gallery in the Algarve region of Portugal, along with about 26 other artworks. You can view the exhibition video on YouTube here.
