Public Solo Exhibition, December 2019

From December 11th – 21st (2019), I presented “A Decade of Shady Business”, a solo exhibition of my artworks at The Fitzrovia Gallery, West London. As the title suggests it was a sort of celebration of ten years exhibiting by ballpoint (‘Shady’) art.

I created a new mini series of political drawings/artworks featuring world leaders. One of Boris Johnson, Brazil’s Bolsonaro, Trump, Putin, and more hopeful Greta Thunberg for luck.

“Joker Johnson”, “Fire Bolsonaro”, “Dumping Trump”, “Valak Putin”, & “Greta The Great”

The artwork of Boris Johnson “Joker Johnson” was unveiled early in the exhibition press release a couple months before the opening and immediately went viral making it’s way not just into celebrity Instagram posts, magazine (UK & Germany) articles, news websites, but onto protesters placards (more information here).

The main artwork in the exhibition was not in fact one of the political ones but a special, slightly interactive drawing featuring Kate Moss that took over 200 hours to complete.

“No ID Bunny” has interchangeable fabric patches that go over the artworks eyes.

Above image shows how people can open a door into the artwork and change the patches over the subject’s eyes. For more information including an in depth video on this artwork, please see this page here.

Another artwork in the show that took about 200 hours to create was the tenth in The Desktop Series; “The Mighty Desktop X”. These ones tend show the array of influences behind me & my art.

One of the other large original artworks exhibited was a type that is quite different. Shown below, it consists of 9 cut outs from Giclee prints of “No ID Bunny” (the eyes bits) which were individually hand finished and then mounted on top of another ‘Desktop’ artwork.

Another new kind of artwork (at least for me) was a collaboration/instillation with designer Simon Parchment. The eyes in the above artwork were made onto patches that went onto the artwork “No ID Bunny” but also went onto some custom caps. One special cap is the collaboration artwork below.

As the far right image below shows is I drew onto the cap, Simon also embroidered onto it and he created the LED plinth that houses it. The Buddha Eyes shown on the plinth is the connected to the crossed out eyes in the before mentioned artworks (wisdom & insight of celebrity identities etc).

The largest artwork I showed was also the largest I’ve ever made, which is shown below. “SKYlarking Vibes” is paints, collage, markers etc on canvas. The woman in White coat is a print from a drawing I did originally of her in ballpoint pen, which I cut out and pasted on the canvas. The rest of the artworks is done directly by hand in pens & paints etc. The flowers in the bottom right were painted in oils by Tim Gatenby.

“SKYlarking Vibes” is 160 x 130cm

In all there were 17 artworks on the walls in the gallery, some of the ones not shown above are in the three images squashed together below.
