“Army of One”, original artwork – drawing. 80x65cm (unframed size).

Artwork Description

This new drawing of Churchill is based on a rare photo of him inspecting troops before battle during WWII, in his top hat, smoking a cigar and brandishing a US made Thompson submachine gun (AKA Tommy Gun). I love the mischievous, almost cocky grin on his face.
The original photo, taken so long ago, is small and not in perfect condition with poor resolution etc but I wanted to scale it up a huge amount for this drawing which obvioulsy meant inferring and expanding on image details where necessary (almost everywhere).

Artwork Process

I used 2 different pens to draw the three versions of Churchill. The left one is a sketchy drawing of him using just ballpoint pen. The right one is a sketchy one using just paint pen (acrylic marker). The center / main one is a photo relaistic very involved drawing of him using both mediums. Ballpoint pen for all the shading and details and the paint pen for the dark parts. The combination is quite powerful and the most I’ve combined the two together in one drawing before.

The Result

As each version is done differently each Winston Churchill wears a slightly different facial expression, at least to me, which I find quite fun. I tripled up on what was already a powerful image of the man. I wanted to keep the background to a minimum and keep a Black and White palatte to respect the historica nature if it but that meant I had to introduce some colour into the frame. See images of it framed below.
