“Diana Lights” Limited Edition Print

A Little Print Artwork Background

From the original drawing (more info on the original down page) the background was digitally replaced with the simple Gray/Silver gradient, with the subtle highlight Pink flare in the top Left.
As you can see below the original had an expressive combination of Classical designs and graffiti. For the print I wanted to keep it more simple and ‘clean’/classy… If you would prefer some addition designs im the background for an extra price I would be happy to add them by hand using mixed media (use the Contact Form here to enquire).
In respect to the Blue colours in her eyes (see above image) and jewelry there is also a subtle border line around the artwork in the same Blue.

Timesheet (& COA) for artwork logging total of 248 drawing hours

For one of the big, main, statement pieces for my solo exhibition at Art Catto Gallery, in Portugal (the original sold at the exhibition, you can view a fun video on YouTube here about the show including this artwork) I decided to create a vibrant artwork of the late Princess Diana.
She is obvioulsy everywhere at the moment from the disappointing statue unveiled at Kensington Palace earlier this year to the films & TV programmes etc, but I wanted to create something a bit more fun. I researched MANY photos of her to perhaps work from and ended up having to combine 3 existing ones together to get the composition I was after. I then changed a few things from there (such as her dress) to make it fit with what I wanted to achieve.
I managed to get into some serious detail, which is what being a photo realistic artist as partly all about.
In the background are some designs, graphics and expressive marks in an urban spirit to put a bit pf myself into it in a respectful and fun loving way. In the end I was mainly just looking to create a positive feeling emanating from a realistic and unseen image of her as a unique artwork.

Not just her eyes were drawn Blue but also her earrings and necklace gems

I was very lucky as a youngling to meet her a couple of times and in one of those instances I remember, whilst looking up exchanging a few words with her, being quite entranced by her electric Blue eyes, which is why I decided to draw them Blue in an otherwise Black & White portrait.

This shows hour 150 in the process that took about 2 months in total to complete. Ballpoint pen and marker used for her and paints and inks for the background

The artwork took a total of 248 hours and I managed to document enough of the process to create the short video below…

Diana Lights

The idea behind the title “Diana Lights” was to bring out her vibrant energy, but as you can see I kept an urban and/or Neo Rococo illustrative background to hold the artwork in a young/modern, cultural context…
I sourced an antique frame for it which I then got a friend and master carpenter (Justin, from Craft Design Studio) to restore, refurbish, and custom paint the frame into a more modern unique frame that matches the background of the drawing.
