Drawing Malcolm X in ballpoint & marker pen

Back in January I started a commission for a client/collector to create a large photo-realistic drawing of the civil & human rights activist/icon Malcolm X.
My aim was to create something powerful and quite impressive to match his passionate energy & historic importance.
Coming in just under 500 hours (496.5 to be exact! photo here shows the time sheet I used to log my hours/weeks) over the course of 4 months i drew from an old photo of him making a famous speech from 1964. Because the photo was taken so long ago the pixel density and information within the photo to work from was very little. As I was scaling up the artwork to a size of 105x75cm meant really adding and inferring detail into the artwork.
I used a combination of ballpoint pen for the shading and detail work with Black acrylic marker for the darker areas to increase contrast and project the artwork in a strong manner.

As you can see in a comparison image below there are a couple of changes made to the drawing such as giving him a Red tie (to introduce some vibrancy) and removing the bulky microphones from in front of him, that I believe were obstructing him a bit.
